Module 6 · Lesson 2 of 2

Choose music you’re allowed to post.

Music you don’t have the rights to can get your post muted or taken down. Here are the three safe places to get it.

The steps

  1. Your music can come from three safe places.

  2. Your own song: one you wrote and recorded, or one a friend made and gave you in writing.

  3. A music library you pay for. Its plan gives you a music license: written permission to use its songs.

Read what the license covers. Some allow posting but not ads.

  4. A music service that makes songs for you, like Suno, on a plan that allows selling and posting.

Free plans mostly don’t allow commercial use. Suno allows it from its Pro plan, at $8 a month.

  5. Flow Music’s Starter plan comes with Google AI Plus. Google’s terms don’t say outright that you may use what you make in an ad. Read them first.

What never to use

  1. Never a popular song you don’t own. Not even a few seconds of it.

  2. Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and YouTube listen for famous songs. They can mute your post or take it down.

  3. Buying a song or streaming it doesn’t give you the right to put it in your film.

Write your plan

  1. Fill in your music plan in the boxes below.

Your film

My Films

Fill it in here. It saves as you type, and later lessons use it.

Do this now

Decide where your film’s music will come from, and fill in your music plan.

Check yourself

  • Is your music your own, from a library you pay for, or from a service whose plan allows selling?
  • Have you checked that the plan allows posting and ads?
  • Is your film free of any popular song you don’t own?

If any answer is no, go back over the steps, or look below.

Stuck?

I already used a famous song in my draft.
Take it out before you post. Make or pick a track with the same mood and speed instead.
I can’t tell if my plan allows commercial use.
Search the service’s help pages for “commercial use”. If it doesn’t plainly say yes, choose a plan or service that does.
I can’t afford a music plan.
Make your own: hum a tune you made up into your phone. Or ask a musician friend for a short piece, with their yes in writing. One month of a music service is also enough for one film.
