Module 5 · Lesson 3 of 3

Spot lips that don’t match the voice.

Lip sync means the mouth moves with the words. Even a small delay looks wrong. Learn to spot it in any video.

The steps

  1. When the lips and the sound don’t match, they are out of sync. Viewers feel it before they know what’s wrong.

  2. Look for three things: lips moving before the sound, lips moving after it, or a still mouth while someone talks.

  3. Watch the mouth, not the eyes. Turn the sound up.

  4. Watch the words with b, p or m in them. The lips must close on those sounds.

Say “my brother Paul” out loud. Feel your lips close on the m, the b and the p.

  5. Watch the end of each line too. The mouth should stop when the sound stops.

Practice on your feed

  1. Open Facebook, Instagram, TikTok or YouTube. Find three videos where someone talks to the camera.

  2. Watch each one with the sound on. Write “in sync” or “out of sync” for each.

Dubbed films and AI videos are where you’ll most often find lips out of sync.

  3. When you make your own film, Module 8 shows how to fix a talking shot that is out of sync.

Do this now

Watch three talking videos in your feed and write “in sync” or “out of sync” for each.

Check yourself

  • Do you know the three signs of lips out of sync?
  • Did you check three videos with the sound on?
  • Do you know which sounds make the lips close?

If any answer is no, go back over the steps, or look below.

Stuck?

Everything looks in sync to me.
Pick one video and watch only the mouth on words with b, p or m. If the lips don’t close on them, it’s out of sync.
I can’t hear the sound in my feed.
Tap the speaker picture on the video, usually in a corner. Then press the volume-up button on the side of your phone.
The video goes by too fast to judge.
Watch it two or three times. Most apps play a short video again when it ends. Look at the mouth only.
