Module 2 · Lesson 6 of 6
Write your one-page story.
Put everything from this module on one page. That page is the plan for your film’s story.
The steps
Fill in each part in the boxes below. What you wrote in earlier lessons is already in.
Fill it in
Who: the one or two people in it, with a name and age for each.
Where: one place, and whether it’s inside or outside.
When: day or night, and anything that matters about the time, like “the night before the funeral”.
What they want: one thing, right now.
What goes wrong: the trouble. This is your first three seconds.
The turn: the moment things change. A secret comes out, or someone makes a choice.
The last image: the final thing we see before the film ends. Pick a picture people will remember.
Read it out loud
Read your page out loud while your phone’s stopwatch runs.
iPhone
Open Clock, tap Stopwatch at the bottom, then tap Start.
Android
Open Clock, tap Stopwatch, then tap the start button.
If it takes longer than your film, it’s too long. Cut until it fits.
It saves as you type. In Module 3 it sits right under your script.
Your film
My FilmsFill it in here. It saves as you type, and later lessons use it.
Do this now
Finish your one-page story and read it out loud.
Check yourself
- Does your page answer all seven parts, from who to the last image?
- Does it take less time to read out loud than your film will run?
- Can you see it in My Films?
If any answer is no, go back over the steps, or look below.
Stuck?
- My page takes longer to read than my film.
- Cut “where” and “when” to a few words each. Then cut anything that happens before the trouble starts.
- I can’t find what I wrote.
- Open My Films. Everything you’ve written is there, in order.
- My story doesn’t have a turn.
- Ask what someone learns, decides or loses in this scene. That moment is the turn. If nothing changes, pick a different scene.
