Module 8 · Lesson 2 of 8

Save every character in your film.

A saved character keeps a face, clothes and a voice the same in every shot. You make each one once, from your casting sheet.

The steps

  1. Open your casting sheet from Module 4. You’ll make one character for each person on it.

Start a project

  1. In Flow, click + New project. A project keeps this film’s clips and characters together.

To rename it, click the edit icon under the project, type your film’s title, then click the check mark.

Make a character

  1. Open the project. On the left, click Characters. To add one, click New Character.

  2. In the prompt box, describe the person from your casting sheet: age, face, hair and clothes.

Example: “A woman in her sixties, short grey hair, warm brown skin, a navy cardigan over a white blouse.”

  3. Flow needs at least one picture. Let it make one from your words, or upload one or two of your own.

Uploading? Google says a plain background works best.

  4. Click the generate icon. Look at the pictures and keep the one that matches your casting sheet.

Face wrong? Change one detail in the description and make it again.

  5. Type the character’s name. Pick a voice from the list, then click Add to Character.

Point at a voice to hear a sample. Pick the one closest in age and accent to your casting sheet.

  6. Click Done at the top right. Your character now sits under Characters.

If you play yourself

  1. Flow can make an avatar of you: your face and your voice. On your computer, open your Flow project. Click your picture at the top right, then Create avatar, then Get started.

  2. A square code appears. Point your phone’s camera at it and tap the link that shows up. Follow the steps on your phone.

Your phone records your face and your voice. Use a quiet room, with light on your face and the phone at eye level.

  3. To put yourself in a shot, type @me in the prompt box instead of a character’s name.

Avatars aren’t offered in the UK, Switzerland or the European Union. There, upload a clear photo of you as the character’s picture and pick the closest voice.

Whose face you may use

  1. Nobody else’s face without their written permission. Never a famous person, and never a real child.

    Module 10 explains these rules.

Fill it in here. It saves as you type, and later lessons use it.

Do this now

Make and save every character in your film.

Check yourself

  • Is there one saved character for every person on your casting sheet?
  • Does every character have a name and a voice?
  • Is every real face in your film yours, or one you have written permission for?

If any answer is no, go back over the steps, or look below.

Stuck?

The face keeps coming out wrong.
Add one detail at a time: age, then hair, then clothes. Or upload a clear photo on a plain background.
I can’t find Characters.
Open your project first. Characters is in the list on the left, with Videos and Images.
No voice sounds right.
Make a custom voice instead. Describe how it should sound, like “a low, slow voice from Georgia.”

Still stuck? Email info@bookwriter.vip and say which lesson you’re on. A person reads every message and writes back.
