Module 8 · Lesson 5 of 8
Check every word and every mouth.
A talking shot can change a word, cut a line short or move the lips at the wrong time. Check each one now, before you put the film together.
The steps
Open your script next to your talking shots.
Play the first one with the sound on. Follow the line in the script as you listen.
Remake any take that changes, adds or drops a word. Even one word.
Watch the mouth
Play it again and watch only the lips. Do they move before the sound starts, or after it stops?
Either one is bad lip sync. It looks like a badly dubbed film.
Listen to the last word. Is the line cut short before the sound ends?
When a take keeps coming out wrong
Shorten the line, or split it over two shots, and make it again.
Tick the checks below for each talking shot.
Your film

Do this now
Check every talking shot and tick the ones to remake.
Check yourself
- Did you check every line against the script, word by word?
- Did you watch for lips moving before or after the sound?
- Did you remake every take with a wrong word?
If any answer is no, go back over the steps, or look below.
Stuck?
- I can’t tell if the lips are off.
- Watch only the mouth, with the sound on, two or three times. Ask someone else to watch it once too.
- It keeps dropping the same word.
- Check the line fits in 8 seconds. Cut a word you don’t need, or split the line over two shots.
- Remaking takes uses too many credits.
- Make one try at a time, and check it before you make the next.
