Module 8 · Lesson 4 of 8
Make a shot where your character talks.
In Flow, the line goes into the shot itself. The talking shot comes back with the voice and the lips together.
The steps
Find the first line of dialogue in your script. Read it out loud with a stopwatch.
Keep each talking shot to 8 seconds or less.
Google says speech is less likely to come out when the line doesn’t fit in an 8-second clip.
Line too long? Split it over two shots, or cut words. The Dialogue Runtime Calculator times it for you.
Write the prompt
Type @ and the character’s name, so Flow uses their saved face and voice.
Say where they are and what they’re doing while they talk.
Then write “says:” and the line in quotation marks. Copy and paste it from your script instead of typing it.
Example: “@Ruth sits at the kitchen table at night, lamp light on her face. Close shot. She looks up and says: ‘You read my letter.’”
Set the length to 8 seconds or less, then click the generate icon.
Listen to it
Play it with the sound on. Listen for every word, and watch the mouth.
Keep the take where the voice fits the character and the line ends whole. Download it and name it by shot number.
Two people talking? Make one shot per line.
Your film
My FilmsFill it in here. It saves as you type, and later lessons use it.
Do this now
Make your first talking shot, 8 seconds or less.
Check yourself
- Did you paste the exact line from your script?
- Is the shot 8 seconds or less?
- Can you hear every word?
If any answer is no, go back over the steps, or look below.
Stuck?
- The clip came back with no voice.
- The line is probably too long for 8 seconds. Cut it in half and make two shots.
- The voice sounds different from the last shot.
- Type @ and the saved character’s name every time. The saved character carries the voice.
- It changed my words.
- Make it again with the line pasted inside quotation marks. The next lesson shows how to check every word.
