Module 5 · Lesson 2 of 3

Check every line by ear, word for word.

Before a line goes in your film, check that it says exactly the script’s words, all the way to the end. Practice now on your own voice.

The steps

  1. Ask two questions of every read. Does it say exactly the words in the script? Is the end of every sentence there?

  2. AI voices sometimes swap, add or drop a word, or stop before the last one. You only catch it by listening.

Read along with the script while you listen. Don’t trust your memory of the line.

  3. Listen once with headphones. They let you hear small mistakes and endings that are cut short.

  4. Listen once on the phone speaker. That is how most viewers will hear it.

  5. Any read that fails either question gets made again. Never keep a line with a wrong word.

Practice on your own read

  1. Open your recording app.

    • iPhone

Open Voice Memos. It has a red and white sound wave.

    • Android

      Open Recorder or Voice Recorder.

  2. Tap the red button and read every line of your script. Tap it again to stop.

  3. Play it back with the script in front of you. Tick each line that is word for word, ending included.

  4. Circle any line you changed, skipped or cut short. Record those lines again.

Do this now

Record yourself reading your script, then check every line: once on headphones, once on the phone speaker.

Check yourself

  • Did every line say exactly the words in your script?
  • Did you hear the end of every sentence?
  • Did you listen once on headphones and once on the phone speaker?

If any answer is no, go back over the steps, or look below.

Stuck?

I don’t have headphones.
Any earbuds work, even cheap ones. If you have none, listen twice on the speaker in a quiet room, with the phone close to your ear.
I keep changing words when I read.
That’s normal. Read slower and follow each word on the page as you say it. The voice in your film has to match the page.
I can’t tell if the end of a sentence is cut off.
Listen for the last sound of the last word, like the “t” in “last”. If it stops sharp or fades too soon, it’s cut off.
