Module 1 · Lesson 2 of 4
Know what AI does well, and what still goes wrong.
AI is good at some things and still bad at others. Knowing both now saves you money later.
The steps
What it does well
Faces from a real photo. Start from a clear photo, and the face looks like the person.
Moody light: a lamp at night, a window at sunset, a dim kitchen.
Short scenes in one place: two people talking in a kitchen, a car or on a porch.
A voice reading a line with feeling: angry, tired, scared or happy.
What still goes wrong
A face that changes from one shot to the next. Keeping faces, clothes and places the same is called continuity.
Extra fingers, or hands that look wrong.
The fix is simple: plan shots that leave hands out. Module 4 shows how.
Crowds of strange faces. The more people in a shot, the stranger the faces in the back.
Words on signs, screens and papers. They often come out as nonsense letters.
Lips that don’t match the voice. The mouth moving in time with the words is called lip sync.
Sentences cut off at the end, so the last word goes missing.
Every problem has a fix
Every problem on this list has a lesson later that shows you how to avoid it. You don’t have to remember them now.
Spot the mistakes yourself
Open TikTok, Instagram or YouTube on your phone. Tap the search box, the magnifying glass, and type “AI short film”.
Pick one video. Watch it twice.
The second time, look hard at faces, fingers, the people in the back and any writing.
Write down every problem from the list above that you see.
Do this now
Find one AI video in your own feed and write down every mistake you spot from the list.
Check yourself
- Can you name two things AI does well?
- Can you name three things that still go wrong?
- Did you write down at least one mistake you spotted?
If any answer is no, go back over the steps, or look below.
Stuck?
- I don’t use TikTok or Instagram.
- Use YouTube. Open it, tap the magnifying glass at the top and type “AI short film”.
- I can’t tell if a video was made with AI.
- Read the words under the video for “AI”. Many apps also add a small AI label near the name of whoever posted it.
- I didn’t see any mistakes.
- Tap the screen once to pause on a face, then on the background. Check the fingers and any writing. Short, simple videos may have none, and that’s worth noticing too.
