Final Edit 2

A whole-book editing pass that reads the finished manuscript in one sitting, fixes the contradictions and plain mistakes the book itself proves wrong, rechecks every fix, and shows each change with an Undo.

Definition

Final Edit 2 is a pass that runs on a finished manuscript. It reads the whole book as one document, works out what the book has established, and fixes the places where the book contradicts itself or has a plain mistake. It is not a line editor: it changes as little as it can, usually a word or a name, and leaves your voice alone.

It replaced the first Final Edit in October 2026. The first version often ended with a list of items for the author to review; Final Edit 2 settles what it can prove and leaves the rest of your words as they are.

What it fixes

The errors that only show up when the whole book is read together, each fixed only when the book itself proves it is wrong.

  • Names and surnames that drift partway through the book.
  • Ages, dates and timelines that do not add up.
  • Places and objects that change: the apartment on a different floor, the truck in a different color.
  • Relationships that shift: a sister who becomes a cousin.
  • Plain mistakes: wrong words, legal or job titles used backwards, missing closing quotation marks, typos.

How it checks itself

Every fix is read a second time against the book, and any fix that goes too far is put back. Every change that stays appears in the Book Report as Was, Now and Why, with its own Undo, and the full list downloads as a PDF. A Pro pass runs three full rounds and a final judgement of every change.

What it deliberately does not do

Final Edit 2 does not impose a different voice on the book, rewrite prose toward a generic standard, add or cut scenes, or judge whether the story works. Anything it cannot prove is a mistake stays as you wrote it.

Why it matters

Long drafts rarely fail at the chapter level. They fail at the manuscript level: small contradictions that compound across 70,000 words. Without a whole-book pass, those errors ship into the published book. Final Edit 2 catches them once, before you publish.
