The whole story matters

Catch the details that slip between chapters

Most editing tools look at one sentence or one chapter at a time. The mistakes that hurt a novel live between chapters: a detective who is 42 in chapter 3 and 38 in chapter 19, a sister who becomes a cousin, a bakery that moves across town. You only catch those by holding the whole book in your head at once. That is the job Final Edit 2 was built for.

It reads your manuscript from the first line to the last, works out what your book has already established, and fixes the places where the book contradicts itself or simply has a mistake. It changes as little as it can: usually a word or a name, sometimes a sentence. When it can’t prove something is wrong, it leaves it alone.

You get back the same book, in the same voice, without the slips that make a reader stop and flip back a few pages to check what they missed.

A guide to keeping characters consistent

From one chapter to the next

What Final Edit 2 fixes

Five kinds of mistakes. Each is fixed only when your own book proves it is wrong. The examples below are made up to show the kind of change you will see.

Names that drift

A character’s name or surname changes partway through, a nickname takes over, or two spellings fight each other. Final Edit 2 works out which name your book really uses and puts it back everywhere it slipped, not just in the one place you happened to notice.

Illustrative example · before
Marcus Bell walked into the station.
After
Marcus Hale walked into the station.
Reason for the change
He is Marcus Hale in every other chapter.

Ages, dates and timelines

Birthdays that move, a pregnancy that runs eleven months, a Monday that comes twice in one week, a flashback set in the wrong year. Final Edit 2 keeps track of when things happen and fixes the numbers that don’t add up.

Illustrative example · before
She was nineteen that summer.
After
She was seventeen that summer.
Reason for the change
Chapter 2 says she turns eighteen the following spring.

Places and objects

The apartment that changes floors, the red truck that turns blue, the scar that switches arms, the skyline of a city the story isn’t set in. Final Edit 2 remembers where things are and what they look like.

Illustrative example · before
He parked the blue truck behind the diner.
After
He parked the red truck behind the diner.
Reason for the change
The truck is red in chapters 1, 4 and 9.

Relationships

A sister who turns into a cousin, a boss who becomes a business partner, a couple who met at college in one chapter and at a wedding in another. Final Edit 2 holds every relationship to what your book set up first.

Illustrative example · before
Her cousin Dana was waiting on the porch.
After
Her sister Dana was waiting on the porch.
Reason for the change
Dana is introduced as her younger sister in chapter 1.

Plain mistakes

The wrong word a spell-checker can’t see, a legal or job title used backwards, a missing closing quotation mark, a stray typo. Small errors, but they are the ones readers quote in reviews.

Illustrative example · before
The city took the land by imminent domain.
After
The city took the land by eminent domain.
Reason for the change
“Eminent domain” is the legal term.

Keep your voice

What it leaves alone

An editor you can trust knows what not to touch. Final Edit 2 is built to fix mistakes, not to have opinions about your writing.

Your voice and style

Slang, dialect, fragments, long sentences, short ones. If it is how you write, it stays.

Your story choices

It won’t add scenes, cut chapters, change the ending or make a character nicer.

Anything it can’t prove

If your book doesn’t clearly show that something is wrong, it isn’t changed. In our test, seven possible problems were left alone for exactly that reason.

The big-picture questions

Whether your middle sags or your ending lands is a judgment for you, your readers or a developmental editor. Final Edit 2 doesn’t pretend otherwise.

From manuscript to report

How it works

Upload your manuscript or choose a finished BookWriter book. Run a pass, then review the changes in your Book Report.

  1. It reads the whole bookFinal Edit 2 reads your manuscript start to finish in one sitting and builds a picture of what your book has established: who everyone is, how old they are, how they are related, where things are and when things happen.
  2. It fixes only what the book proves, then checks itselfFor each problem it finds, it makes the smallest change that fixes it and records why. Then a second read goes back over every fix and asks one question: does this change hold up against the book? Any fix that goes too far is put back.
  3. You see every changeEach change appears in your Book Report as Was, Now and Why. Keep it, or press Undo to put your original sentence back. Download the full list as a PDF to keep with your files or share with a co-author.

A more useful editing pass

What changed from the first Final Edit

We built Final Edit 2 because the first Final Edit gave authors homework.

In our internal review of 12 books edited by the first version, 11 came back with items left for the author to review: 396 items in total, about 33 per book, with 176 on one book. These are historical results from that review, not a forecast for every manuscript. They showed us where a more complete editing pass would help.

Final Edit 2 settles what it finds. If your book proves something is wrong, it fixes it, checks the fix and tells you what it did. If your book doesn’t prove it, your words stay as they are. Either way, you are not left with a list of chores.

One internal test, not a guarantee

Our test on a 74,000-word novel

Before releasing Final Edit 2, we ran it on a finished 74,000-word novel. This is what one pass did.

The surname is the kind of mistake that ruins a book quietly. Partway through, one character’s last name changed, and the new name spread across several chapters. A tool that reads one chapter at a time sees a consistent name in each chapter and moves on. Final Edit 2 saw the whole book, worked out which name was right and restored it in all 25 places.

The 13 undone changes matter just as much. They were fixes that went further than the book could support. The second read caught them and put the original words back. That self-check is the reason you can let Final Edit 2 near your manuscript.

One test is one book. Yours will have its own mistakes. But it shows the two things that matter most in an editor: it finds what is really wrong, and it stops itself from going too far.

For a deeper check

Final Edit 2 Pro: three full rounds and a final judgement

A single pass is the simpler starting option. Pro is available when you want a deeper check: for a long novel with a large cast, a story with several timelines, a draft assembled through heavy rewrites, or a manuscript approaching print. Choose the depth of review that fits the work in front of you.

A Pro pass runs three full rounds. Each round reads the whole book fresh, as the round before left it, so a later round can catch what an earlier one missed. After the third round, a final judgement looks at every change from all three rounds against the finished book and can put any of them back.

Every change that survives appears in your Book Report and your PDF, each with its own Undo, the same as a single pass.

Consider Pro for:
  • Long books with a big cast or more than one timeline
  • Drafts that were heavily rewritten or merged from versions
  • Your last check before you publish or order print copies

When you still want a human editor

For feedback on structure, pacing, character development, or whether the ending works, consider a developmental editor. Final Edit 2 focuses on contradictions and specific mistakes; it does not provide the same kind of creative judgment. A human copyeditor or proofreader may also be useful for the level of review you want. Tell an editor what has already been checked, agree on the scope, and review the final manuscript before publication. Different kinds of help can fit different stages of the same book.

Before you upload

Questions, answered clearly.

Will Final Edit 2 change my voice or style?

No. It fixes contradictions and plain mistakes, and changes as little as it can, usually a word or a name. It doesn’t rewrite sentences to sound better, and it leaves your slang, dialect, fragments and rhythm alone.

What exactly does it fix?

Names and surnames that drift; ages, dates and timelines that don’t add up; places and objects that change; relationships that shift; and plain mistakes such as wrong words, backwards legal or job titles, missing closing quotation marks and typos. It fixes each one only when your own book proves it is wrong.

What won’t it do?

It won’t rewrite your prose, add or cut scenes, change your plot or ending, or judge whether your story works. It also leaves alone anything it can’t prove is a mistake.

Can I undo a change?

Yes. Every change appears in your Book Report as Was, Now and Why, with its own Undo. Undo puts your original sentence back. If you have rewritten that sentence since, Undo won’t overwrite your newer version.

Can I see every change in one place?

Yes. When the pass finishes, you can download a PDF of every change, chapter by chapter, showing what each sentence said before, what it says now and why it changed.

How long does it take?

Our internal test on one 74,000-word novel took about six minutes. That is one measured run; timing varies with the manuscript and the pass. Pro runs three rounds and a final review, so allow longer than a single pass.

What is the difference between a pass and a Pro pass?

A pass reads the whole book once, fixes what the book proves wrong and rechecks every fix. A Pro pass runs three full rounds, each reading the book as the last round left it, then a final judgement of every change that can put any of them back.

Can I upload a manuscript I wrote somewhere else?

Yes. Upload a Word (.docx) or EPUB file of up to 150,000 words, choose a pass and pay at checkout. You’ll need a free BookWriter account. Uploaded manuscripts use paid passes; the free pass is for books written in BookWriter.

Is my first pass really free?

Yes, for every book you write and finish with BookWriter. Open your Library and press Final Edit 2 on the finished book. After that, a pass is $4.99, or $14.99 for Pro.

What if a pass cannot finish, or finds nothing to change?

If a pass cannot finish, the pass is given back so you can run it again. A completed pass can also find no supported corrections. That means it did not find changes to make in that review; it is not a guarantee that a manuscript contains no errors.

Can I use the Pro 3-pack on different books?

Yes. The 3 Pro passes in the pack can be used on any of your books, one book or several.

Is my manuscript private?

Your manuscript lives in your private BookWriter account and isn’t published or shared publicly. You keep all rights to your book. Our privacy policy has the details.

Does it replace a human editor?

Not for big-picture story feedback. A developmental editor tells you whether your story works, and Final Edit 2 doesn’t try to. It removes the contradictions and slips, so an editor’s time, and your readers’ attention, go to the story.

Is this the same Final Edit I used before?

No. Final Edit 2 replaces the first Final Edit. The first version often ended with a list of items for you to review. Final Edit 2 fixes what your book proves wrong, rechecks each fix and shows you every change.
