How a dust jacket is measured
A dust jacket is not a wider paperback cover. It is a case wrap plus two flaps plus the print bleed. The text block you already measured for the paperback — pages times PPI — is the starting point, but the jacket must be wider than that block by the thickness of the boards and by the flaps that fold inside the cover.
For the text block, the math is the same as the spine calculator uses. White 50lb at 0.002252 inches per page, cream 50lb at 0.002500, white 60lb at about 0.002500, white 70lb at about 0.002800. A 300-page book on white 50lb is 300 times 0.002252 equals 0.676 inches, or 17.16 mm. That is the thickness of the printed block, not the jacket. The jacket wraps a case, and the case has boards. Boards add about 0.125 inches per side, or 0.25 inches total, to the spine width the printer must cover. The jacket spine for that same 300-page block is 0.676 plus 0.25 equals 0.926 inches, or 23.52 mm. The same 300 pages on cream is 0.750 plus 0.25 equals 1.000 inches, or 25.40 mm. The quarter inch of board is the reason a jacket built at paperback spine width without the build will be short when it wraps the case.
Flaps are independent of spine. A jacket flap is the part that folds inside the front and back, typically 3 to 4 inches per flap. The flap is not an extension of the spine; it is an extension of the front and back panels. A jacket with 3.5-inch flaps is front width plus spine plus back width plus flap plus flap plus bleed on both edges. For a 6×9 with a 0.926 jacket spine and 3.5-inch flaps, the total width is 6.00 plus 0.926 plus 6.00 plus 3.50 plus 3.50 plus 0.25 equals 20.176 inches. The height is trim height plus bleed on top and bottom, 9.00 plus 0.25 equals 9.25 inches. The same book with 4-inch flaps is 21.176 inches wide, a full inch wider, with no change in spine. The safe zone inside the trim is still 5.00 by 8.00 for a jacket, inset about 0.50 inches, with the spine text centered and the flap copy kept well inside the flap safe.
The four numbers that change with hardcover
Every hardcover jacket needs four numbers, and the tool gives all four with provenance so the designer and the printer agree.
Text-block spine in inches and millimeters is the thickness of the printed block as built from pages and stock. This is the only number that moves with page count and paper. Change stock from white to cream at the same page count and this number shifts by the PPI difference times pages.
Jacket spine in inches and millimeters is the text-block spine plus the board build. This is the width of the spine panel on the jacket, not on the case. The case spine and the jacket spine should match, because the jacket wraps the case, but the case has its own template that may add a different board allowance per printer. The tool reports the jacket spine as text block plus 0.25, which is the common KDP case build, and notes the per-board thickness so you can adjust if your printer specifies a different build.
Full jacket width and height in both units is the size of the single spread you will upload. It is back width plus jacket spine plus front width plus both flaps plus bleed on both edges on the width, and trim height plus bleed on top and bottom on the height. A 6×9 with a 0.926 jacket spine and 3.5-inch flaps is 20.176 by 9.25 inches, which is 512.48 by 234.95 mm. The numbers should match the export to 0.01 inches or 0.25 mm.
Safe zone inside the trim is the text-safe rectangle where type must live on front, back, and flaps. On a 6×9 jacket it is about 5.00 by 8.00 inches inside the trim, inset 0.50. The flap safe is the same inset from the flap edges and from the fold. Type that sits 0.25 from the trim at full size may look correct on screen but is outside the jacket safe and will be too close to the edge where a slight trim variance pushes it into the margin.
The comparison table in the output keeps the same jacket spine and flaps across trims while the total width changes, because the panels change. A 300-page block is 0.926 on the jacket whether it sits in a 5×8 or an 8.5×11 jacket, yet the full jacket is 17.426 by 8.25 for the small trim versus 24.426 by 11.25 for the large. The delta is front and back area plus flaps and bleed, not spine.
Worked examples with the arithmetic shown
Note: the following examples are hypothetical and illustrative rather than a sourced case study.
A 6×9 hardcover at 300 pages on white 50lb with 3.5-inch flaps is the trade hardcover that will carry spine text. PPI is 0.002252. Text-block spine is 300 times 0.002252 equals 0.676 inches, or 17.16 mm. Board build is 0.25, so jacket spine is 0.676 plus 0.25 equals 0.926 inches, or 23.52 mm. Flaps are 3.50 each, bleed is 0.125 on all edges, so full jacket width is 6.00 plus 0.926 plus 6.00 plus 3.50 plus 3.50 plus 0.25 equals 20.176 inches, or 512.48 mm. Full height is 9.00 plus 0.25 equals 9.25 inches, or 234.95 mm. Safe zone on the front is 5.00 by 8.00. The breakdown shows trim 6×9, text-block spine 0.676, board build 0.25, jacket spine 0.926, flaps 3.50 each, bleed 0.125, safe zone 5.00 by 8.00, and full jacket 20.176 by 9.25. The recommendation is to center jacket spine text with 0.05 inches quiet on each side of the hinge and to keep flaps at 3 to 4 inches.
The same 300 pages with 4-inch flaps shows how flaps move the total without touching the spine. Text-block spine is still 0.676, jacket spine still 0.926, but full width is 6.00 plus 0.926 plus 6.00 plus 4.00 plus 4.00 plus 0.25 equals 21.176 inches, a full inch wider. The height is the same 9.25. The wider flaps give more room for flap copy — often the author bio on the front flap and blurbs on the back flap — but they also make the jacket heavier and more prone to creasing if the stock is heavy. The choice between 3.5 and 4 is design, not spine.
A thin 5.5×8.5 hardcover at 80 pages on cream 50lb tests the lower bound where the jacket spine is mostly board. Text-block spine is 80 times 0.002500 equals 0.200 inches. Board build is 0.25, so jacket spine is 0.450 inches, or 11.43 mm. Full width is 5.50 plus 0.450 plus 5.50 plus 3.50 plus 3.50 plus 0.25 equals 18.700 inches. Height is 8.50 plus 0.25 equals 8.75 inches. The verdict is warning: very narrow text block, jacket spine is mostly board. The recommendation is to keep spine text off or to a small publisher device. A thin text block that insists on a full title down the spine will set the type at perhaps 6 points, which is not readable on the shelf. The thin spine is not a failure of the jacket; it is the correct width for that page count and stock, but it changes what the spine can carry.
A mid-range 250 pages at 6×9 on cream shows how the same jacket math scales. Text-block spine is 250 times 0.002500 equals 0.625 inches. Jacket spine is 0.875 inches. Full width at 3.5-inch flaps is 6.00 plus 0.875 plus 6.00 plus 7.00 plus 0.25 equals 20.125 inches. The same 250 pages on white 50lb would be 0.563 text block and 0.813 jacket, so the jacket would be 0.062 inches narrower. The stock choice moves the jacket spine by the PPI difference times pages, just as it moves the paperback spine, plus the constant board build.
A long 600 pages at 6×9 on white 70lb tests the upper end. PPI is 0.002800, so text-block spine is 600 times 0.002800 equals 1.680 inches, jacket spine is 1.930 inches, full width at 3.5-inch flaps is 6.00 plus 1.930 plus 6.00 plus 7.00 plus 0.25 equals 21.180 inches. The jacket is very thick and heavy. The tool flags it as very thick, not as a failure, but as a prompt to confirm trim, stock, and case weight. At this length, a lighter stock can save about 0.33 inches of text-block thickness, which reduces jacket width and overall weight without changing the words.
How the jacket differs from the paperback wrap
The paperback wrap is back plus text-block spine plus front plus bleed. The jacket is back plus jacket spine plus front plus flaps plus bleed. The spine panel is wider by the board build, and the total width grows by flaps plus that build. The height is the same — trim height plus bleed — for both, because the boards do not change the height.
Do not use the paperback spine for the jacket without adding the board, and do not use the jacket spine for the paperback. The paperback wrap at 6×9 300 white with 3.5 flaps would be 12.926 wide if it were a jacket without the board, but the jacket is 20.176 wide because the flaps are not part of the paperback. Conversely, the jacket spine at 0.926 used as a paperback spine would be 0.25 too wide and the spine text would drift.
The case itself is a third object. The case wrap — often a cloth or a printed laminate — has its own spine that should match the jacket spine, because the jacket wraps the case, but the case may have a different safe margin and may carry foil stamping rather than ink. Some printers supply a separate case template where the safe zone is smaller to accommodate the turn-in. Use the paperback spine plus the board build for the jacket, and the case template for the case, and keep the title string identical on both.
Building the spread after you have the numbers
Open the jacket template generator or your designer's file and enter trim, binding hardcover, page count, stock, and flap width. The generator will produce an outline with trim lines, spine fold lines, flap folds, bleed edges, and safe zones marked. Compare the outline's jacket spine and full jacket width to the tool's numbers. They should match to 0.01 inches or 0.25 mm. If they do not, the template used different assumptions for PPI, board, or bleed, and the tool's provenance is the tiebreaker: pages times PPI as published plus the documented board and bleed.
Place the back panel on the left of the spread, the jacket spine in the middle, the front panel on the right, and the flaps outside the front and back. Extend any background that should reach the edge past the trim to the bleed edge. This includes solid colors, photographs, and gradients. Do not extend spine text or barcode art into the bleed; those must live inside the safe zone.
Set the jacket spine text centered on the jacket spine panel with at least 0.05 inches of quiet space between the letterforms and each hinge line. The hinge is where the spine meets front and back, and the flap fold is where the flap meets front and back. Text that touches either will wrap or crease and will look misaligned. For thin jackets under about 0.60 inches, consider a small publisher mark instead of a full title, because the spine cannot carry a readable title at that width.
Set the flap copy next. The front flap typically carries the author bio or a tight jacket blurb, the back flap carries blurbs or an also-by list. Keep flap copy inside the flap safe zone, roughly 0.25 inches inside the flap edges and the fold. Do not let flap copy run to the fold; the fold is a score, not a margin, and text that crosses it will crack.
Export at 300 dots per inch with bleed included. A 20.176 by 9.25-inch spread at 300 dots per inch is 6053 by 2775 pixels. Exporting at 72 dots per inch will print soft even though the inch math was right, and a spread exported at the trimmed size without bleed will be a quarter inch short in both width and height, which the printer will scale to fit and thereby shift the spine panel by an eighth of an inch. Include the bleed in the export size; do not export at the trimmed size and assume the printer will add bleed.
How to verify in the previewer and by hand
Upload the jacket PDF to the previewer if the printer provides a jacket preview, or open the print-proof PDF that the printer returns. The PDF should show trim lines, bleed, and hinge lines. Open it at 200% and measure the distance between the hinge lines for the jacket spine. That distance should match the tool's jacket spine within 0.01 inches or 0.25 mm. If it does not, the spread was built from a remembered width or from a template that was not refreshed when page count changed.
Check the bleed. In the PDF, the 0.125 strip outside the trim should contain only extended background. No text, barcode, or logo should be in the 0.125 strip. A text box nudged near the edge in InDesign often lands in the bleed in the PDF even though it looked inside on screen. Pull it inside the safe zone.
Check the safe zone. Turn on the safe zone guides and confirm that every readable element sits inside. Pay special attention to the front title near the top and the flap copy near the folds, where designers often push type toward the edge for air. A title that sits 0.15 inches from the trim at full size is inside the trim but outside the jacket safe, and a slight trim variance will push it into the margin. Keep a genuine buffer.
Check the flaps. The flap width should match the tool's flap width exactly, and the flap copy should sit inside the flap safe zone, not overlapping the fold. The fold is a score that will crack heavy ink coverage, so keep solid dark backgrounds thin near the fold or add a light rule to hide the crack.
Check on a phone as well as on a laptop. Open the jacket flat at 100% and then scaled to thumbnail. The jacket is rarely seen as a flat at thumbnail; it is seen as a 3D object on the product page. The 3D preview is the more realistic check for whether the jacket spine text remains inside the panel when the book is viewed at angle.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Building the jacket from the paperback width without adding the board is the most frequent error. The jacket built at 0.676 text-block spine without the 0.25 board will be a quarter inch short when it wraps the case. The title that was centered on the paperback spine will be off-center on the jacket. Pull the jacket spine from the tool, which already adds the board.
Forgetting the flaps is the second. A jacket built as back plus spine plus front plus bleed, without flaps, is 7 inches too narrow for 3.5-inch flaps. The file will be rejected or the printer will scale it to fit, which shifts the spine panel by 3.5 inches. Include flaps in the width before exporting.
Adding the flap width to the spine is the third. The flap is not an extension of the spine; it is an extension of the front and back panels. A jacket where the spine was widened by the flap width will have a spine panel that is 3.5 inches too wide and the front and back will be 3.5 inches too narrow.
Using the paperback safe zone for the jacket is the fourth. The jacket safe is larger — about 0.50 inches inside the trim versus 0.25 for paperback — because the jacket wraps boards and the hinge is more forgiving. Text that is 0.30 from the trim on a paperback may be safe, but on a jacket it is too close to the board edge.
Setting jacket spine text for a thin text block is the fifth. Below about 0.60 inches of jacket spine, a full title will be small. A thin text block where most of the jacket spine is board should carry no spine text or a small mark, not a full title.
Exporting at the wrong resolution or without bleed is the sixth. The jacket width is a layout dimension, not a raster size. Build at 300 dots per inch with bleed included. A jacket that is correct in inches but exported at 72 dots per inch will print soft, and a spread exported at the trimmed size will be a quarter inch short in both dimensions, which the printer will scale and thereby shift the jacket spine by an eighth of an inch.
Rounding the jacket spine to a nice number is the seventh. A calculated 0.926 inches rounded to 0.90 inches is 0.026 inches, or about 0.66 mm, of drift. The printer will build at the width you declare, not the width you rounded to. Use the three-decimal inches or two-decimal millimeters the tool reports, especially when the jacket spine carries text.
Placing flap copy across the fold is the eighth. The fold is a score that will crack heavy ink. Keep flap copy at least 0.25 inches inside the fold and the trim, and keep solid dark backgrounds thin near the fold or add a light rule to hide the crack. The previewer will not always warn you; the proof will show the crack.
When the jacket template is the wrong comparison
The tool models jacket math with 0.125 bleed, 0.25 board build, and 3.5-inch default flaps. If you print offset or with a printer that uses a different board thickness or flap default, the numbers will differ. Some printers use 0.1875 board per side, so the case build is 0.375, not 0.25. Some default to 3-inch flaps. The arithmetic structure is the same — trimmed panels plus jacket spine plus flaps plus bleed — but the constants differ. Request that printer's jacket template and compare: the tool's KDP numbers are the reference, not a universal.
For a cloth case with a printed laminate rather than a jacket, the jacket spine and the case spine are two objects. The jacket wraps the case; the case itself is often letterpressed or printed direct. Do not use the jacket width for the case or vice versa. The page count times PPI is the common text-block thickness, but the board addition and flap logic are not interchangeable.
For slipcases or boxes that hold multiple volumes, the jacket spine of each volume is still pages times PPI plus board for that volume, but the container interior adds clearance. The tool sizes one book's jacket, not multi-book packaging. Size the slipcase from the thickest volume's jacket spine plus clearance, not from the sum of all jacket spines.
Final checks before you commit and upload
Run the tool once with the page count, stock, and flap width you plan to ship and once with a stress case where page count is 20 higher or where stock is one step heavier. If the stress case still places jacket spine text comfortably inside the panel with quiet on both sides of the hinge, the choice is resilient. If the stress case pushes text toward the hinge or off the spine, you know which variable is the weak link.
Open the exported spread at 100% and measure the jacket spine panel between the hinge lines. It should match the tool's jacket spine within 0.01 inches or 0.25 mm. If it does not, the spread was built from a remembered width or from a template that was not refreshed when the page count changed. Also measure the total width between the bleed edges. It should match the tool's full jacket width within the same tolerance.
Compare the title strings on the front, on the jacket spine, and in the distributor metadata. A front that reads The Orchard while the jacket spine reads The Orchard: A Memoir and metadata reads The Orchard: Essays introduces inconsistency even though the cover width is technically correct.
Upload and verify live. In the jacket previewer or the print-proof PDF, look at the jacket spine between the hinge lines at 200% zoom. The letterforms should be centered with equal quiet on each side. In the 3D preview, rotate the book and confirm the jacket spine text remains inside the panel when the book is viewed at angle and that the flaps sit flat inside the front and back. If they do, lock the choices and log the trim, page count, stock, flap width, text-block spine, jacket spine, full jacket width and height, and safe zone alongside the file name. When the book grows, compare the new numbers to the logged ones rather than trusting memory that the file is now longer. The arithmetic is fixed; your file is the variable.
