Your trim is not your cover — your cover is trim plus spine plus bleed

A 6×9 book at 300 pages on white 50# is not a 6×9 cover. It is a 12.926 × 9.250 inch file before the hardcover jacket, and the 12.926 is back 6 plus spine 0.676 plus front 6 plus bleed 0.125 each side, by height 9 plus bleed. The interior trim defines the back and front panels; the spine the pages made defines the hinge; the bleed defines the trim allowance the press requires to cut without white edges.

The spine is pages multiplied by PPI for the paper: white 50# at 0.002252, cream 50# at 0.002500, white 70# at 0.002800. At 300 pages on white 50# the spine is 0.676 inch. On cream 50# the same 300 pages is 0.750 inch. On white 70# it is 0.840 inch. The same manuscript yields three spines because paper thickness differs. The full cover width is back plus spine plus front plus bleed. At 6×9 on white 50# that is 6 + 0.676 + 6 + 0.25 = 12.926 wide, 9.250 tall. On cream the same 300 pages at 6×9 is 13.000 wide. The height never changes with paper; only width does.

Why 0.25 inch is the readability threshold

Below about 0.25 inch the spine text is not reliably readable. At 90 pages on white 50# the spine is 0.203 inch — leave the spine blank and center the title only on the front. At 110 pages the spine is 0.248 inch — borderline, you may set 7 point type with tight tracking or leave blank. At 120 pages the spine is 0.270 inch — readable, keep spine text inside a 0.25 inch safe corridor. At 150 pages the spine is 0.338 inch — comfortably readable. At 200 pages it is 0.450 inch — generous. The tool translates the page count you enter into spine and full cover so you can judge readability before you export, not after you proof.

The page count you enter should come from the KDP page-count calculator at the trim you will publish, not from a guess. The words per page at 5.5×8.5 is 275, at 6×9 is 300, at 7×10 is 350. The same 75,000 words is 273 pages at 5.5×8.5, 250 at 6×9, 215 at 7×10. The spine follows pages, not words. The cover follows trim plus spine.

Paperback versus hardcover — jacket flaps change the file

Paperback full width is back + spine + front + bleed. Hardcover adds jacket flaps at about 3 inches each side plus the board wrap and hinge. The full jacket at 300 pages 6×9 on white 50# is 12.926 + 6 = 18.926 wide, 9.250 tall, before the case. The flaps carry front flap copy and back flap author photo and wrap inside the case. The tool adds flap width to full width for hardcover, not for paperback, so the hardcover jacket file is correctly wider.

The paperback cover you upload to KDP is the full cover at 12.926 × 9.250 at 300 dpi with bleed. The hardcover jacket you upload to IngramSpark is the full jacket at 18.926 × 9.250. The case adds about 0.125 inch to each board plus hinge, but the jacket the tool reports is the paper that wraps the case.

Bleed is not optional — export at full cover with bleed

The trim you chose is not the cover size the press needs. The press needs bleed 0.125 inch on all sides to trim without white edges. The full cover the tool reports includes bleed; the trim does not. At 6×9 with 300 pages on white 50# the full cover is about 12.926 × 9.250 before jacket, at 300 dpi with bleed. At 5×8 with 300 pages on white 50# the full cover is 10.926 × 8.250. At 5.5×8.5 it is 11.926 × 8.750. At 7×10 it is 14.676 × 10.250. Each trim has its own full cover, each with the same spine at the same pages. Export at full cover dimensions at 300 dpi with bleed.

The interior trim at 5.5×8.5 on white 50# at Garamond 11 on 14.5 is about 275 words per page; at 6×9 at 300 words per page. The cover full width at 5.5×8.5 is 11.926, at 6×9 is 12.926 — the wider trim makes the wider cover at the same spine. The interior and the cover are siblings, not parent and child.

The ladder — spine by paper and full width by trim

KDP prints signatures and perfect-binds at the trim you chose. A 273-page book at 5.5×8.5 on white 50# at 0.615 spine prints as 17 signatures at 16 pages plus a remainder. The same 273 pages at 6×9 at 300 words per page is 250 pages, spine 0.563, 16 signatures. IngramSpark uses the same spine math at the same paper, but the press and paper stock may differ slightly; confirm spine with Ingram's calculator before final jacket. The spine the tool reports is the KDP spine, which is within a few thousandths of Ingram at the same paper. The jacket the tool reports is the paper that wraps the case.

Designing for the spine you actually have

Spine text at 0.676 inch can be 9 point Garamond with tracking 50, centered. At 0.750 inch on cream can be 10 point. At 0.840 inch on white 70# can be 11 point. At 0.270 inch the spine text should be 7 point with tight tracking or omitted. The barcode that sits on the back should be placed 0.25 inch from the bleed, not on the spine, and not on the front. The spine text should be centered on the spine, not on the back, and horizontal, not vertical.

The also-boughts that only a narrow rank earns are the carousel under the buy box that Amazon builds from readers who bought this leaf. Rank 12 in a narrow leaf earns also-boughts from that leaf. The file you export is the product the press buys

The cover file at 12.926 × 9.250 at 300 dpi is 3,878 × 2,775 pixels. The hardcover jacket at 18.926 × 9.250 is 5,678 × 2,775 pixels. The interior PDF at 6×9 is 1,800 × 2,700 pixels per page at 300 dpi. The cover and the interior are different products at different dimensions, each at 300 dpi, each with bleed where required.
