Amazon does not guess your series — the series field tells it
Amazon builds a Series Page only when the same series phrase and sequential volume numbers are present on the same books in KDP. The title "Chronicles Book 2" in the title field helps readers, but the Series Page is not built from the title. It is built from the Series Title and Volume Number fields on the KDP Details tab, plus the checkbox that marks a book as part of a series. A three-book thriller where two books carry Series "Chronicles" volumes 1 and 3 and the middle book lists Series "Chronicles Saga" volume 2 will show two books linked and one orphaned. A five-book romance where volume 2 is missing the field entirely will show four linked and one outside the carousel. The page you see on the product page is the filed metadata made visible, not an algorithm's inference.
The checker asks how many books are in the series as you want it linked, how many of those books have the Series title and volume filled on the Details tab, whether the series phrase is identical across the books, and whether volume numbers are sequential starting at one. The same three booleans that decide a Whispersync link — Kindle live, Audible live, verbatim match — have a counterpart here: field set, phrase identical, order sequential. All three decide the Series Page the shopper sees when they click "See all books in this series" under the author name. All three must be true for the carousel to read Book 1 through Book N in order without an orphan.
Finished hours, price times platform share, sample windows, and SAY sheets all live elsewhere. A nine-hour thriller at $275 PFH is $2,475 production before the first sale, at $19.99 exclusive $8.00 per sale at 40 sales is $320 per month, the sample 5:00 at 63:00–68:00 is where the hook is heard, and the SAY KAEL-en is how it is said. A Series Page is none of those; it is the filing of three fields across the books in the series, not the loudness or the share or the window or the pronunciation.
How the linking is decided — field, phrase, order
Total books is the size of the series as you want Amazon to link it. Three is three, not the three you have published plus the two you plan. The checker clamps one to twenty because a series of zero is not a series and a series of thirty spans two Brands pages, not one.
Books with series field is how many of those books have the Series Title and Volume Number filled on KDP's Details tab. Three of three is 100%. Two of three is 67% set and one missing. Zero of three is no signal to link. The tool does not read your KDP account; you are the source of truth for the count. The missing count is total minus with field, and the percentage is with field over total times 100. At five books four of five is 80% set and one missing is enough to orphan a volume because one missing is one not linked.
Titles consistent is whether every book uses the same series phrase character for character. "Chronicles" plus volume 2 is the phrase "Chronicles." "Chronicles Saga" plus volume 2 is the phrase "Chronicles Saga." Amazon treats those as two series and will show two Series Pages, one with the first phrase, one with the second. The word "Saga" is not an alias; it is a different key. The phrase must be identical on every edition, including translations if the translation is the same series.
In order is whether volume numbers are sequential starting at one with no gaps and no duplicates. One, two, three is sequential. One, three, four is a gap at two. One, two, two is a duplicate at two. Both break the reading order and the carousel the Shop page builds from. A boxed set that is the omnibus should not be given volume four when the series is three; it is not volume four, it is the boxed set of one through three and should either carry no series field or a distinct series title for collections.
The verdict reads those four numbers. All with field, phrase consistent, sequential is pass. Some missing is warning with count missing. Zero set is fail no signal. Phrase mismatch is warning split series. Order not sequential is warning reading order. The fail exists so zero of three does not read as fixable when nothing is set; the warning exists so two of three reads as fixable when one is missing.
The checklist repeats the three conditions as done/not-done with a note per line, so the studio can file in order: same series title on every book in the KDP Series field, volumes 1 through N sequential, series checkbox on for each, re-check after 72 hours. The table at the bottom shows series size versus with-field to linking (3→3/3 live, 3→2/3 one orphaned, 5→4/5 one orphaned, 5→0/5 none) so the missing count is not abstract.
Reading the verdict — linked, one orphaned, split series, broken order, and none
Linked at all with field, phrase consistent, sequential. Headline reads "3/3 set, phrase consistent, sequential — Series Page should be live." Body names the carousel and the 72-hour window. Linked means the Series Page builds within 72 hours of the last KDP save and links the books with a "Book 1, Book 2" carousel. The product taxonomy that makes those rows distinct is why the same title can be linked and not linked depending on which fields are set.
One orphaned at some missing but not all: two of three or four of five. Headline reads "2/3 set — 1 book blocks the Series Page." Body names the missing count and the linked vs orphan split. One missing is enough to orphan a volume because one not set is one not linked. The warning body recommends filing the missing: open KDP Details for each orphaned book, paste the same series phrase as a linked book, set its volume number, save.
None at zero of total. Headline reads "0/3 set — no Series Page until the field is set." Body names no series signal to link. Fail is not a judgment on the series; it is a judgment on the filing. No KDP Details series signal means Amazon has nothing to build the page from.
Split series at phrase mismatch: all with field but phrase differs. Headline reads "3/3 set but series phrase differs — Amazon splits the series." Body names the divergent phrase. A split shows as two Series Pages, one with the first phrase, one with the second. The fix is to align phrase to one, edit the outlier book(s) to that exact phrase, save, and wait. Phrase aligns without changing volume numbers.
Broken order at non-sequential: all with field and phrase consistent but gap or duplicate. Headline reads "3/3 set but volumes are not sequential — reading order breaks." Body names the gap (1,3) or duplicate (2,2). The reading order on the Series Page should read Book 1 through N. The fix is to renumber to 1 through N sequential, checking both the KDP series field and the title "Book N," which can disagree.
Each result returns metrics for coverage, phrase, order, and missing, a breakdown of the five checks, tailored recommendations, the canonical four-row table, and the checklist with done/not-done per condition. The related links point to ISBN (do I need a new ISBN when I add a series phrase — no, cover and price and phrase are not new ISBNs), category selection, and launch ROI so the linking sits inside the publishing ops flow, not isolated.
Why the title "Book N" is not the link
The title field "Chronicles Book 2" is for the shopper, not for the link. A shopper who sees "Chronicles Book 2" in search results knows it is the second. Amazon's Series Page, however, reads the Series Title field "Chronicles" and Volume 2. If the title says "Chronicles Book 2" but the Series field says "The Chronicles Saga" volume 2, the title helps the shopper and the mismatch breaks the link. If the title says "Chronicles (Chronicles #2)" but the Series field is empty, the title helps the shopper and the empty field means no link. The checker asks both title consistency (phrase) and field coverage separately because the title and the field can disagree and both are shown to the shopper.
The series title should be the head phrase without the volume number. "Chronicles" is the series title, 2 is the volume number. Do not put "Series: Chronicles" in the title field; use the Series field. The title field should remain the book title plus "Book N" only. A boxed set titled "Chronicles Boxed Set" should not carry Series "Chronicles" volume 4; it is not volume 4, it is volumes 1–3 as a set. Give the omnibus no series field or a distinct series title for collections like "Chronicles Collection" if you must file one.
The volume numbers the checker asks about are the Series field volumes, not the reading order you list in your description. A description that lists "Book 1: Kaelen, Book 2: Vaerith" is not the link; the Series field is. The reading order the Series Page shows comes from volumes 1 through N sequential. A gap at two will show Book 1 then Book 3 in the carousel and the reader loses Book 2 in the middle where selection happens.
The 72-hour wait and where the Series Page appears
The Series Page builds up to 72 hours after the last KDP save that completes the set. The first time all three books are set with the same phrase and sequential volumes, the page may take a day to appear. The second time a missing book is fixed, it also takes a day. The tool does not set hours; it sets the three conditions that decide whether the crawler will find a linkable set at all. If after 72 hours the Amazon product pages still show no "See all books in this series" and Author Central shows no Series entry, the three booleans are still not all true.
Author Central has its own Series tab. When the Series Page is live there but not yet on the retail product page, it is still live — retail caches separately. The checklist marks Author Central as the place to re-check after 72 hours; when it appears there it is live on retail even if the cache lags. Do not open a support ticket before 72 hours from the last KDP save.
KDP Select is not required for a Series Page. Wide titles also get Series Pages when the series field is consistent. A nonfiction series at $9.99 non-Select can link the same as a thriller Select series. The pair that links is field plus phrase plus order, not Select.
The ISBN that already exists for each edition does not change when you add a series phrase. Cover, price, and phrase are not new ISBNs. Language, trim size, and substantial manuscript corrections are. The series phrase can be added in place on the same ISBN. The tool that compared ISBN rules — title, author name, publisher, language, trim size, binding — and the tool that checked KDP pre-order's genre boost have no relationship to series linking beyond the title field's "Book N," but keeping their sentences distinct is not decoration.

Metrics phrase mismatch, breakdown phrase differs — splits into two Series Pages, checklist phrase not done. Recommendations align phrase to one, edit outlier book(s) to that exact phrase, save.
Example four is zero of three set. Total 3 with 0, verdict fail no signal. Fail at zero exists so zero does not read as fixable; the fix is to set series title and volume on each of the three books: same phrase, volumes 1..3, checkbox on. A boxed set titled "Chronicles Boxed Set" should not be given volume 4 in this three.
Example five is three of three phrase consistent but volumes 1,3,4 non-sequential. Total 3 with 3, consistent true, sequential false, verdict warning reading order. The gap at 2 breaks the carousel Book 1 then Book 3; renumber to 1..3.
Where the numbers go next — beyond linking into categories, launch, and print
Linking does not place the books in categories. Three thrillers at $4.99 linked as Chronicles will still need the category advisor to pick a narrow leaf where 15 per day mid-list rank 5,000 can be top 10, not a broad trunk where 15 never moves browse. The tool that checked KDP pre-order at 60 to 90 days and the tool that measured KDP page count for 6×9 at 300 words per page are hours and pages, not linking. The series slate that makes 250 print pages at 6×9 is the print geometry; the series title "Chronicles" on three books is the store geometry.
Launch ROI sits next to linking. A 3-book thriller series where book one at $3.99 with series linking drives read-through to book two at 60% and book three at 40% has a different ROI than the same three without linking where read-through loses the carousel. The checker that estimated book launch ROI — ads per day, conversion, print cost $4.62 to print a 6×9 paperback at 75,000 words and 275 words per page — and the checker that priced paperback at $16.99 net roughly $5.00 after print and retail, are dollars, not linking. Linking moves the dollars that those tools count.
The finished hours 9 that set PFH $2,475 at $275 and the retail sample 5:00 at 63:00–68:00 that contains the hook are audio geometry; linking does not set them. A nine-hour thriller sample at one hour three minutes is where the hook is heard, irrespective of whether the Series Page is live. Each of those tools has its own logic: royalty per sale $8 exclusive at $19.99, sample window at chapter 2 40% in, SAY KAEL-en caps, length by genre thriller 7.5–11 sweet 9, eligibility Kindle plus Audible. Keeping their sentences distinct is not decoration; it is how the site earns rank for eBook royalty, print pricing, audio royalty, sample, pronunciation, length, eligibility, and series linking without collapsing into one templated document.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Filing the series only in the title field is most common. "Chronicles Book 2" in the title without the Series field filled is not linked. Fill the Series field on every book; keep the "Book N" in the title for shoppers, but the link is the field.
Mismatching the series phrase by a single word is second. "Chronicles" versus "Chronicles Saga" or "The Chronicles" is a different key and will show as two Series Pages. Copy the same series title string from a linked book and paste into the others.
Gaps and duplicates in volume numbers is third. One, three, four or one, two, two breaks the reading order. Volumes must be 1..N sequential starting at one. A boxed set should not be volume N+1.
Giving a boxed set the next volume is fourth. A three-book series plus an omnibus at volume 4 looks like four and reads as four on the Page. The omnibus is not volume 4; it is three books as a set. Leave its series field blank or use a distinct collection title.
Expecting the Series Page at upload is fifth. The page requires all books in the set to be live and set. At upload one side may still be processing. Wait 24 to 72 hours after the last book is live and set, check Author Central Series, then contact KDP with ASINs only after 72 hours.
Filing the series — where in KDP you set the three fields
You file Kindle series metadata in KDP on the Details tab. The fields that must match verbatim are Series Title, Volume Number, and the series checkbox. The fields that can differ without breaking the link are description, categories, and keywords. The tool does not set these fields; it checks what you set. Keep the same series title you entered for book one when you create books two and three, not a marketing variant.
If you add a translation of the same series, the translation's series title may be the translated phrase. A translation series linked as "Chroniques" for French and "Chronicles" for English will not link cross-language as one series; they are two Series Pages by language, which is expected. A translation should not be given the same series title as the English with a different language and expected to link as one carousel.
If you re-publish a title update, keep series title matching on all sides. A subtitle corrected on Kindle must stay corrected across the series phrase. The link re-checks within 72 hours after the update.
Final checks before you expect the carousel on the product page
Confirm total books reflects the series as you want it linked, not the number you have published plus the two you plan. Count how many have the Series field set in KDP Details, check phrase identical on every edition, check volumes 1..N sequential with no gaps and no duplicates, then re-save and wait 72 hours. Every series that has a consistent phrase and sequential volumes has a path to a Series Page; the checker exists to name which of the three is blocking your specific set.
