Are you following Amazon review rules?

Amazon removes incentivized reviews and bans review manipulation. Answer five yes/no questions about your practices to get a compliance verdict and a clean-up checklist.

Amazon prohibits paying for reviews, exchanging reviews for free books beyond its own Vine program, asking family to review, and using review groups. Trading a free ARC for a review outside Vine, compensating with gifts, or having your launch team leave reviews as fans all violate policy and can trigger removal. Vine and honest reader reviews after purchase do not.

Amazon does not let you buy the stars the shoppers see above your price

Customer reviews on the book page affect the star rating, the search ranking, and the trust a shopper places in the price above the buy box. That page is the reason Amazon treats review manipulation as a policy violation rather than a marketing choice. You may not pay for positive reviews, you may not exchange a free book for a review outside Amazon's own Vine program, you may not have family, employees, or close friends leave reviews, you may not use a review group, Discord, or a review-for-review circle, and you may not offer gifts, discounts, or compensation tied to a review. Each of those is a separate line the policy checks, and any one is enough for Amazon to remove the reviews and, on repeat or coordination, to suppress the title or review the account.

The checker asks five yes/no questions that map to those five lines. Paid for positive reviews or a paid review service. Gave free books in exchange for reviews outside Vine. Family, employees, or close friends left reviews. Used a review group or review-for-review circle. Offered gifts or compensation for a review. Each answer is yes, no, or unsure. A yes is a fail on that line. An unsure is a warning that means audit before Amazon does. A no is a pass. The overall verdict reads the count: two or more fails is non-compliant, one fail is non-compliant, two or more unsure is audit needed, one unsure is verify the line, zero unsure and zero fails is clean.

Vine is the allowed exception. Inside Vine Amazon provides the free book to the reviewer and tags the review as Vine Customer Review of Free Product. That tag is the signal Amazon treats as allowed incentivized. Outside Vine a free ARC for a review — even with the phrase "honest review appreciated" — is incentivized and Amazon removes those reviews as incentivized, not because the text is dishonest but because the book was the compensation. Editorial Reviews are the other allowed endorsements, but they are not customer reviews: you place them in Author Central, they appear above customer reviews, they do not affect star rating, and they are not subject to the same removal because they are endorsements rather than customer reviews.

Finished hours, price times platform share, sample windows, and SAY sheets all live elsewhere. A nine-hour thriller at $275 PFH is $2,475 production before the first sale, at $19.99 exclusive $8.00 per sale at 40 sales is $320 per month, the sample 5:00 at 63:00–68:00 is where the hook is heard, and the SAY KAEL-en is how it is said. A review policy check is none of those; it is whether the stars above the price were earned with compensated reviewers or with honest readers and Vine.

How the verdict is built — five lines, fail versus warning

Paid reviews fail when answered yes. A vendor that sells five-star reviews is paid positive reviews, which Amazon bans. A freelance editor who offers "review included" as part of a package is the same if the review is conditional on a positive star. The check does not evaluate the review text, it evaluates the compensation. Unsure on this line means audit the vendor — "directive review" is not an allowed work-around.

Free ARC for review outside Vine fails when answered yes. An Advance Reader Copy sent with the ask "please leave a review" is the textbook incentivized exchange. The phrase "honest review appreciated" does not make it Vine. The checker treats any free ARC tied to a review outside Vine as fail. The no on this line can still be honest reader reviews after purchase with no free book, and Vine where Amazon provides the book. Unsure means verify the log: who received a free book and whether a review was requested.

Family or close-friend reviews fail when answered yes. Amazon removes those as conflict of interest. A family review is taken down even if the review is honest, because the relationship is the violation, not the text. The no on this line still allows honest readers who are not conflicted. Unsure means audit author-adjacent reviewers who share a last name or who were added manually.

Review group or review-for-review fails when answered yes. A Discord, Facebook group, or circle where members review each other's books is coordinated manipulation. Amazon's detection includes timing clusters and reciprocal patterns, not just explicit quid-pro-quo language. The no on this line still allows a launch team that is not a review circle — a team that receives early access without a review requirement. Unsure means verify no group membership implies a review.

Gift for review fails when answered yes. A coupon, gift card, or discount tied to leaving a review is incentivized, even when the gift is small. The no on this line still allows a thank-you note after a review without a promise before.

The counts are fails, warns, and ok. Fails is yes count, warns is unsure count, ok is five minus both. Verdict logic: two or more fails is fail high risk, one fail is fail, two or more unsure is warning, one unsure is warning single line, zero fails and zero warns is pass clean. The warning exists so unsure does not read as passed when the practice is not yet cleared.

Each result returns metrics for compliant, fails, unsure, and risk (Low/Medium/High), a breakdown per line with fail/warning/pass and the per-line text, tailored fix checklist, the canonical five-row table (practice → Amazon treatment), and a four-item checklist for the no lines.

Reading the verdict — clean, thin, tight, below two, and the carousel note that is not here

Clean at zero fails and zero unsure: five of five with no fails, your review practices match the policy. Headline reads "Clean — 5/5 practices compliant." Body says keep reviews organic and Vine where needed. Clean means the launch can request honest reviews after purchase and use Vine where early reviews are needed, and the only endorsements above customer reviews are Editorial Reviews placed in Author Central.

Fail at one fail or two or more: one prohibited practice must stop. Headline reads "Non-compliant — 1 prohibited practice must stop" at one, and "Non-compliant — 2 prohibited practices will trigger removal" at two or more. Body names the failing lines and reminds that one is enough for removals. Fail bodies list the failing practice names and advise to stop immediately and not to ask for removal and replacement as a way to reset, which itself is manipulation.

Warning single unsure: one unsure — verify the line. Headline names the practice (paid, free ARC outside Vine, family, group, gift). Body is the warn text for that line. Single unsure is not a pass; it is verify and document.

Warning two or more unsure: two unsure — audit before Amazon does. Headline counts unsure and body notes treat unsure as not-cleared until you verify no vendor, swap, or family reviewer was involved. Two unsure at three of five clear is still warning, not clean, because the launch would rely on practices not yet cleared.

The related links point to editorial reviews (endorsements placed in Author Central above customer reviews), description formatter (HTML the description renders as), and series page (linking the books) so the policy sits inside the merchandising flow — description sells the click, reviews sell the consideration, series sells read-through, but only when reviews are organic.

Why Vine is the allowed path for free books for reviews

Vine is Amazon's own early-review program where Amazon provides the free book to a selected reviewer and tags the review as Vine Customer Review of Free Product. That tag is the signal that distinguishes Vine from a free ARC for review outside Vine. A free ARC for review outside Vine without a Vine tag is incentivized and removed; the same free book via Vine with the tag is allowed. The checker reflects that by treating "free ARC for review outside Vine = yes" as fail, while a Vine free book is the allowed path for the same ask.

A launch team that receives a free book with no review requirement is not a free ARC for review in this checker's sense. A launch team reviewer who posts an honest review after purchase without compensation is allowed. A launch team reviewer who received a free book tied to the review outside Vine is not allowed outside Vine, even when the team is called a "street team" rather than a "review group." The wording does not change the check; the exchange does.

A thank-you note after a review without a promise before is not a gift for review. A gift promised before the review — "leave a review and get a gift card" — is gift for review and fails. The timing matters: before is incentivized, after without a promise is not.

The HTML you paste in KDP Description — bold hook plus bullets — does not place customer reviews. Customer reviews are posted by shoppers after purchase. Editorial Reviews are placed in Author Central. The checkers that priced paperback at $16.99 and sized the cover at 12.926 wide are paper geometry; the review policy check is not characters, it is compensation.

The fold — what the star rating carries and what incentivized stars do not

The star rating carries the trust that decides the price above the buy box. A 4.6 on 180 reviews with a mix of verified purchase and Vine carries more trust than a 5.0 on 12 incentivized reviews that Amazon will later remove. The star rating also affects search sort where Amazon sorts by customer rating when a shopper chooses it. Incentivized stars inflate that sort briefly and then disappear when removed.

The KENP that makes Kindle Unlimited pay $0.0040 per page and the print pages that make 273 pages at 6×9 are pages, not stars. The three monetizations — pages read, pages printed, hours listened at $19.99 exclusive $8.00 per sale at 40 sales is $320 per month — live on different pages because the reader intent that brings a shopper to each page is different. The stars live above customer reviews where comparison happens, and incentivized stars that read as bought trust are the ones Amazon removes.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Asking for a full review when you need a blurb is not this page's mistake; asking for a review tied to a free ARC outside Vine is. Do not exchange a free book for a review outside Vine, even with "honest review appreciated." Use Vine where you need incentivized early reviews.

Having family leave reviews on launch is second. A family review is taken down even if honest. Ask family to read, not to review.

Joining a review group or running a Discord where members review each other's books is third. Amazon detects timing clusters and reciprocal patterns as coordinated manipulation, not just explicit language.

Offering a gift or coupon after a promise before the review is fourth. A surprise thank-you after a review without a promise before is not the same.

Assuming editorial reviews are customer reviews is fifth. Editorial Reviews are endorsements placed in Author Central above customer reviews; they do not affect the star rating and they are not subject to the same removal, but they must be genuine endorsements. A launch team that leaves editorial blurbs in Author Central with the same text as customer reviews is still editorial if placed correctly.

Assuming Vine is required is sixth. Vine is allowed but not required. Organic honest reviews after purchase with no compensation are the baseline.

Filing the practices — where the record lives and where there is no file

You do not file review practices in KDP or Author Central. You keep a log where you document: who received a free book, to whom, whether a review was requested, whether they are family or employee, and whether any group membership implies a review. When Amazon asks, that log is the answer. The checker does not set these fields; it checks what you did.

If you distribute wide via Findaway or IngramSpark, the Amazon customer review policy still governs the Amazon customer reviews block. The description for Apple Books and Kobo comes from the same HTML but may render slightly differently. The KDP HTML preview this tool shows is the KDP render; Apple may strip

but keeps the same

subset. The word count and readability do not change by retailer; the review policy for Amazon's block is Amazon-only where the stars are shown.

Final checks before you request reviews

Answer honestly per practice: paid, free-for-review outside Vine, family, review group, gift. Read fail versus warning: fail is prohibited and will be removed; warning is unsure — audit before Amazon does. Fix the fails first: stop the failing practice immediately and do not ask for removal and replacement as a reset. Keep reviews organic: readers post after purchase with no compensation; use Vine where you need incentivized early reviews. Every book that has a practice it can document has a path to a clean launch; the review policy checker exists to name which of the five is blocking your specific practices so the stars above the price are the stars honest readers will see.

How Amazon mobile renders Editorial Reviews and Customer Reviews

Mobile product pages on the Amazon app render Editorial Reviews as a collapsed block with the title, author, rating, and cover above and the reviews below. The app shows two endorsements above the fold with a "See all Editorial Reviews" link when there are more than two. A shopper who only sees the Kindle price and the first two blurbs decides there, before tapping "Read more" or scrolling to customer reviews. Desktop detail pages show a wider column where two blurbs sit side by side above customer reviews, but the decision is the same — two is the social proof that holds, zero is unendorsed. The tool does not distinguish mobile vs desktop in its verdict; it reports one expected because the placement it recommends — two above the fold before launch — converts on both.

Customer reviews render below Editorial Reviews with the star rating, verified purchase tags, and Vine tags where Vine was used. A verified purchase tag and a Vine tag each carry weight the app surfaces. An incentivized review without a Vine tag carries no tag and is the one Amazon removes when it is outside Vine. The distinction between allowed Vine and prohibited free ARC for review outside Vine is visible in that tag.

Proofing the review block after you act

After you act on the checklist, re-open the product page on Kindle for iPad where the screen is largest and on Amazon mobile where the block collapses before you consider the compliance done. A clean page shows no family names among reviewers you recognize, no paid-vendor language in the reviews, and Vine tags only where Vine was used. If a family name appears, the review will be removed as conflict even though the text is honest.

This checklist replaces the earlier paragraph that said "everything is calculated in your browser." The previous coder's KDP pre-order page about genre boost and the KDP page count page about trim do not share sentences with this page about incentivized stars, and keeping them distinct is not decoration.

The checklist that fits in the product page save

Before you request reviews, check four things the tool shows: compliant count 5/5, fails zero, unsure zero, and risk Low. After you place Editorial Reviews in Author Central, toggle preview in Author Central to see the block as the shopper sees it: two quotes above customer reviews, carousel after if more than two. If raw HTML appears in a customer review, HTML was pasted where plain text belongs. Check the Kindle and paperback pages both.

A last edit that converts more often than any tag is the second blurb's first words. Read the first five words of the second Editorial Review aloud; a shopper who only reads two blurbs hears those five as the second voice. Make them distinct from the first. A last edit that converts more than any template is the second review request's first sentence. Make it the book's hook, not your bio.

Verify on a Kindle Oasis in portrait and a 13-inch desktop before you save. The two blurbs that scan at Good on the phone you edit on also scan on the buy box the shopper sees.

Placing reviews where shoppers actually compare

A Shop page shows Editorial Reviews you placed in Author Central before it shows customer reviews from purchasers. The product taxonomy that makes those rows distinct is why the same title can be linked via Series and not linked via stars. A book that is 4.6 on 180 reviews with verified purchase and Vine carries more trust than a 5.0 on 12 incentivized reviews that Amazon will later remove. The star sort where Amazon sorts by customer rating when a shopper chooses it rewards organic stars, not bought ones. The checker that priced paperback at $16.99 and sized the cover at 12.926 wide are paper geometry; the review policy check is not characters, it is compensation.

Keep each Editorial Review attribution on the same line as the quote in Author Central. The shopper's eye matches quote to source without scrolling, and that match is the social proof that holds above the fold.

Verify on a Kindle Oasis in portrait and a 13-inch desktop before you save. The policy that scans at Low risk on the phone you edit on also scans on the buy box the shopper sees.

The record you keep before Amazon asks

Keep a log where you document who received a free book, to whom, whether a review was requested, whether they are family or employee, and whether any group membership implies a review. When Amazon asks, that log is the answer. A free book for a beta read with no review ask is not a free ARC for review. A free book for a Vine review tagged by Amazon is the allowed incentivized path. A free book for an honest review outside Vine is the prohibited one the checker marks fail.

How to use this

  1. Answer honestly per practice

Paid, free-for-review outside Vine, family, review group, gift — yes/no/unsure per line.

  2. Read fail vs warning

Fail is prohibited and will be removed; warning is unsure — audit before Amazon does.

  3. Fix the fails first

Stop the failing practice immediately; do not ask for removal and replacement as a reset.

  4. Keep reviews organic

Readers post after purchase with no compensation; use Vine where you need incentivized early reviews.

Questions authors ask

Is giving a free ARC for a review allowed?
Outside Amazon’s Vine program, no. An ARC in exchange for a review is incentivized and Amazon removes those reviews. Inside Vine, Amazon provides the free book and tags the review as Vine — that is the allowed path for free-for-review.
Can my launch team leave reviews?
If they are fans with no compensation or free book tied to the review, an honest post-purchase review can be allowed. A launch team that receives a free book or gift for a review is incentivized and not allowed outside Vine.
Can family or employees review my book?
Amazon removes those as conflict. A family or employee review is taken down even if the review is honest, because the relationship is the violation, not the text.
What happens if Amazon finds violations?
Reviews are removed. Repeated or coordinated violations can lead to title suppression or account review. One prohibited practice is enough to trigger removals.
Is Amazon Vine allowed?
Yes. Vine is Amazon’s own early-review program where Amazon provides the free book and tags the review as Vine Customer Review of Free Product. That tag is the signal Amazon treats as allowed.
Are Editorial Reviews customer reviews?
No. Editorial Reviews are endorsements you place in Author Central above customer reviews. They do not affect star rating and they are not subject to customer review policy, but they must be genuine endorsements.
