Module 4 · Lesson 4 of 5
Keep faces, clothes and rooms the same in every shot.
Continuity means faces, clothes and places stay the same from shot to shot. It is the first thing to go wrong in an AI film, and the easiest to plan for.
The steps
Viewers notice when anything changes: a different face, a new shirt, a lamp that moved. It pulls them out of the story at once.
AI films drift when they work from words alone. Type “a woman in a red coat” ten times and you get ten different women.
So anything that has to match goes in as a picture, not just words. That picture is called a reference picture.
You need three kinds: real people’s photos, the pictures you picked for made-up characters, and one picture of the place.
In Module 8 you save these in your studio and pick them for every shot.
Make your list
Fill in the boxes below.
For each character, write the face picture to use and their exact clothes, top to shoes.
Write the place and what stays put in it: the sofa, the lamp, the window, the color of the walls.
Write the time of day and where the light comes from. If it is night in shot 1, it is night in every shot.
Your film
My FilmsFill it in here. It saves as you type, and later lessons use it.
Do this now
List what must look the same in every shot of your film.
Check yourself
- Does every character have one face picture and one outfit written down?
- Is your place written down, with what stays put in it?
- Is the time of day the same in every shot?
If any answer is no, go back over the steps, or look below.
Stuck?
- I don’t have a picture of my place yet.
- Write it in words for now. In Module 8 you make one picture of the place first, then use it for every shot.
- My character changes clothes in the story.
- For a first film, keep one outfit. If the change matters, write which shot it happens in, and give each outfit its own picture.
- Two of my characters look alike.
- Change one thing you see at once: their hair, their age or the color of their clothes. Viewers need to tell them apart in a second.
