Direct answer
BookWriter connects to ChatGPT through MCP. ChatGPT handles the conversation and chapter prose; BookWriter stores the approved blueprint, voice contract, current chapter, accepted versions, recovery receipts, and publication state.
Step by step
The reliable workflow
- 1
Connect
Sign in to BookWriter and authorize the requested book scopes.
- 2
Choose or create a book
Ask ChatGPT to list your projects or start one from your direction.
- 3
Write sequentially
Use the current chapter packet, save the full chapter, and verify that the cursor advanced.
- 4
Review and finish
Review the complete manuscript before explicitly approving an immutable publication snapshot.
What MCP adds
MCP gives the connected assistant a small, documented set of BookWriter actions. Tool annotations distinguish reads, ordinary writes, replacements, and finalization so the client can request the right level of confirmation.
Where the manuscript lives
Chapter prose remains visible in the ChatGPT conversation and the authenticated BookWriter editor. App cards show compact status only; they do not display excerpts.
What Steering Connect does not do
It does not secretly choose a writing model, submit a book to a retailer, or finalize on implied intent. The author chooses the assistant and explicitly approves the stored result.
Frequently asked
Is this a legacy ChatGPT plugin?
No. It is an MCP-backed ChatGPT App using the current Apps SDK resource and OAuth model.
