To connect, sign in to BookWriter, confirm your ChatGPT workspace supports full MCP write actions, enable Developer mode in Settings → Apps → Advanced Settings, choose Apps → Create, add the curated MCP endpoint, complete OAuth and Scan Tools, then test “List my BookWriter books” before attempting a save.

The reliable workflow

    Confirm access

    Open the Steering Connect activation page in the same browser and sign in to your existing BookWriter account.

    Add the app

    Enable Developer mode in Settings → Apps → Advanced Settings. Then choose Apps → Create and paste the curated BookWriter endpoint ending in /api/mcp/chatgpt/v1.

    Authorize and scan

    Choose OAuth, complete BookWriter authorization, select Scan Tools, wait for the scan to finish, and create the draft app.

    Verify

    Enable BookWriter in a new chat and ask “List my BookWriter books.” The response should show only your projects and compact status.

Read access lists owned projects and status. Write access creates plans and saves chapters. Publish access prepares metadata and explicitly approved publication snapshots.

Current ChatGPT eligibility

OpenAI currently documents full MCP write actions on ChatGPT web for Business and Enterprise/Edu workspaces. Individual Pro accounts can connect custom MCP read/fetch actions but not full write actions. Workspace admins or owners may need to enable and approve the app.

A successful connection

ChatGPT can list BookWriter tools, read the app-card resources and agent guide, and return a compact bookshelf card with a real Start my free book action when the offer is available. No raw database IDs or manuscript excerpts should appear.

If authorization loops

Open ChatGPT Settings → Apps → Enabled Apps, reconnect or remove the stale BookWriter draft app, return to the Steering Connect activation page, and complete OAuth again. Do not repeatedly approve a window that points to a different BookWriter origin.
